Gorgeous handmade lace was a part of most evening clothing in the past. This beautiful crochet blouse is not an exception. The pattern is nearly 100 years old and was introduced by Smart Crochet, published by Universal Publishing in 1920’s. The magazine was 68 pages think, offering 69 crochet projects for children, gloves, blouses, and cardigans for women, several doilies patterns, bedspreads, afghans, runners and more.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
J. & P. Coats or Clark’s O.N.T. Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Size 50 (Small Ball) – 13 (13, 15, 15) Balls of White
Steel Crochet Hook No. 12
1 Yard Round Elastic
NOTE
This two piece suit for a lady can be crocheted in sizes 10, 12, 14, and 16. The instructions in this pattern are for size 10. Changes for sizes 12, 14, and 16 are in parentheses.
Gauge: Each motif measures 1 1/2″ diameter; 6 sps = 5/8″; 6 rows = 1″.
Bust Measurements: 30 (32, 34, 36)”.
STEP-BY-STEP CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS
Back of Lace Evening Blouse
First Row of Motifs —
First Motif: Starting at center, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 4, 31 tr in ring. Join to top of ch-4.
Rnd 2: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, skip 1 tr, sc in next tr. Repeat from * around. Join.
Rnd 3: Sl st on 1st lp, ch 4, holding back on hook the last lp of each tr, make 2 tr in same lp, thread over and through all lps on hook (cluster made), * ch 7, make a 3-tr cluster in next lp. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
Second Motif: Work same as First Motif until 2 rnds are completed.
Rnd 3: Sl st in next lp, ch 4, make a 2-tr cluster in same lp, (ch 3, sl st in corresponding sp on 1st Motif, ch 3, make 3-tr cluster in next lp on 2nd Motif) twice. Complete rnd as for 1st Motif (no more joinings).
Continue making Motifs, joining adjacent sides as 2nd Motif was joined to 1st Motif and leaving 6 sps free between joinings on each Motif, until row measures 15 (16, 17, 18)”.
Make 3 more rows of Motifs in same manner.
Band for Blouse (Make 3):
Starting at narrow edge, ch 16. Row 1: Dc in 6th ch from hook, (ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch) 5 times. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2: Skip 1st dc, (dc in next dc, ch 1) 5 times; skip 1 ch, dc in next ch. Ch 4, turn.
Repeat row 2 until Band measures same length as Motifs. Break off.
Sew Bands and Motifs tog, leaving 2 sps free on each side of joining on Motif and 1 sp free on Band and having 9 free sps on Band between Motifs on 1st row and necessary number of sps thereafter to shape Blouse.
Next Band: Work as for 1st Band until piece measures same length as row of Motifs.
Next Row: Work in pat. to within last sp (1 sp dec). Turn.
Following Row: Sl st in next sp and next dc (another sp dec), ch 4, work in pat. across row. Ch 4, turn.
Repeat last 2 rows alternately until 1 sp remains. Break off.
Attach thread to opposite side of starting ch and decrease as before.
Sew Band to Motifs.
Armhole Shaping
Work Motifs until row measures 21 (22, 24, 27)”. Sew in place leaving 3 (3, 3 1/2, 4 1/2)” free to each side.
Next Band: Work straight Band as before until piece is slightly shorter than last Motif row. Sew in place, easing Motifs to fit.
Next Row of Motifs: Work as before, having 2 Motifs less on row for each size. Sew in place, easing in Motifs to fit Band.
Make another Band, having it slightly shorter than last Motif row. Sew in place.
Make another row of Motifs, having 2 Motifs less on row for each size. Sew in place.
Front of Lace Evening Blouse
Work as for Back until 3 rows and 2 Bands arc completed. Sew in place as before.
Next Band: Work in pat. until Band is same length as Motifs,
Next Row: Work in pat. over 3 sps. Ch 4, turn.
Following Row: Work in pat. over next 2 sps, turn.
Last Row: Sl st in next sp and next dc, ch 4, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch. Break off. Attach thread to opposite side of starting ch and dec. in same manner. Sew in place, joining straight edge to Motifs.
Arm-holes for Blouse
Work Motifs as before until row measures 26 (28, 30, 33)”. Sew to Band leaving 5 1/2 (6, 6 1/2, 7 1/2)” free at each side.
Make another Band slightly shorter than last Motif row. Sew in place, easing Motifs to fit.
Make another row of Motifs, having 2 Motifs less on row for each size. Sew to Band.
Make another Band slightly shorter than last Motif row and sew in place as before.
Make another row of Motifs, having 2 Motifs less on row for each size. Sew to Band. Sew up side seams, tucking under arm in Front to fit.
Fill-In-Motif
Attach thread to center of Band between Motifs, sc in same place, (ch 5, sl st in next free lp on Motif, ch 5, sc in same sc on Band) twice; ch 10, sl st in joining of Motifs, ch 10, sc in same sc on Band, (ch 5, sl st in next free lp on Motif, ch 5, sc in same sc on Band) twice. Break off. Fill in all sps between Bands and Motifs in same manner.
Edging for Lace Evening Blouse
Attach thread in 1st free ch-7 sp on neck edge, 3 sc in same sp, ch 5, sl st in top of last sc (picot made), * (5 sc in next sp, picot) 5 times; 3 sc in next sp, 3 sc in 1st free sp on next Motif, picot. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
Work Edging around Sleeves in same manner. Run elastic through top of last Band, adjust to fit comfortably and sew ends tog.
